The following images were created using a phenomena called cymatics.  A dish of water was attached to a speaker and sound was used to vibrate the water.  Various shapes and forms are created depending on frequency and amplitude applied.  The higher the frequency and amplitude the greater the complexity of the form created.  The light gathers at the crest of the wave in the water and the dark areas are the trough.

The particular shapes in this instance resembled those of diatoms, a phytoplankton that encases itself in a silica shell.
